THE AMERICAN ATLAS - 1839

This atlas is possibly the first that contained detailed maps of the United States and the individual states and territories that existed at the time. It was created by David H. Burr, and published by John Arrowsmith, probably in London.

These images are from the Library of Congress' American Memory Collection. They have been edited to remove the gaps between panes. The originals were folded so they would fit in a 20" x 13" case, and the individual panes presumably broke apart when unfolded.  All the maps below are printed approximately 36" x 48" on heavyweight matte paper.
